Chao Chow isn't a 4 star hotel, first and foremost, but if you think you're going to get a 4 star hotel for the incredible rates this place offers then you've lived a very sheltered life. The room was spacious, there was a safe, a TV, large windows, a refrigerator and plenty of storage space. The beds were comfortable and the place, generally, was clean. Breakfast was ok with meats, cheeses and breads, tea and coffee and some Chinese noodles. The surrounding area shouldn't be frequented alone after dark, especially if you're female. It's safe enough during the day, however, for a walk through the atmospheric main street full of food, clothes, electronics and other shops. The red light stuff might be a little shocking to the aforementioned sheltered individuals, however it's not thrust in your face as much as, say, Amsterdam. It's a short, safe walk into the centre of Brussels from Chao Chow, 15 minutes or so at most.
The staff at the hotel were most pleasant, spoke good French and English and generally made us feel welcome and safe. I'd recommend Chao Chow for a budget trip with friends and, if she isn't too squeamish about the odd red light and some tatty curtains in the room, your good lady. All round, very good - you more than get what you pay for. Thanks Rommex!
