The Clarion Hotel, Sligo.
Talk about impressive! As you drive up, it feels like you are driving into a Castle Grounds with the sweeping drive to the most beautiful, massive & imposing granite-stone building. In the grounds is the most beautiful little chapel which is used for wedding receptions and the hotel can hold conferences for tiny groups and up to 400 people!!!
Inside, unexpectedly, it's really modern with clean lines, comfy couches and wide open spaces! There is wi-fi available in the foyer and internet also in the rooms!
The restaurants provide a wide range of delicious food and the staff are ultra-helpful and friendly. The Kudos bar is full of little nooks for a private drink but there is plenty space for groups also!
The rooms themselves are spacious, nicely decorated and virtually sound-proof! There are tv and coffee making facilities in each room and the bathrooms are supplied with plenty of towels, soap, shampoo, handcream and other necessities!
The breakfast was self-service but there was a good and tasty supply of bacon, eggs, sausage, pudding, yoghurts, cereal and juices! Something for everyone!
For families who bring children of any age with them, there is an excellent childrens club (full details on their website - worth checking out) and my son was delighted with all facilities - including the pool (and spa for me!).
All in all, our stay was so comfortable - I can't wait to go back!
The only downside was that I would've loved to find out more about the hotel building itself. My own research found that it was used as a Lunatic Asylum until 1992 and then was restored lovingly by the Clarion. I'd still like to know more and will do some digging for my next trip!
