The eating area has recently been renovated and offers great views over Princes Street to the Old Town opposite. There is also a bar which is popular in the evenings. From the front entrance it is only possible to see a doorway, with stairs leading up to the reception. A lift has now been installed to reach the reception on the first floor. The Royal British Hotel is situated on one of the main shopping streets in Edinburgh, Princes Street. It's the ultimate in perfect location with the train station across the road, buses stopping outside the door and all the cities medieval sites within walking distance!
The hotel itself has an amazing sweeping staircase that spans 4 floors and is shined to perfection! The hotel lobby is on the first floor and is modern and the staff are friendly. There are a couple little bars where you can get a drink and these are nicely modern also but with large windows looking down on the busy Princes Street to make it the ultimate place for people watching and enjoying a wonderful view!
The rooms themselves were a bit of a disappointment as the big windows are reserved mainly for the front reception and dining rooms, so they were dark and a little tired. The furniture is fine but nothing exceptional. Our bathroom/shower-room was totally functional but tiny and a little dated also.
Breakfast was served swiftly and with friendly service but the food was a little greasy and there wasn't much in a Full Fry. The continental however was lovely and had plenty choice.
I wouldn't complain about the hotel in any way. It's an old building that's been sectioned up to make lots and lots of rooms and therefore has a little bit of a Fawlty Towers feel to it but if you want to stay City Centre, it's a good location and all you're looking for is a bed right?
It is a little expensive for what it is but then all the accommodation around Edinburgh is expensive compared to Ireland - I guess that's the price you have to pay to visit a THOROUGHLY AMAZING CITY!!!!!!

The reception staff were very helpful and friendly and the location is excellent. However, this is definitely closer to a two-star than a three-star hotel. My small and shabby but clean bedroom was reached by means of a lift to the second floor, followed by walking in and out and roundabout along a series of corridors and up and down more steps. There is a nicely appointed restaurant overlooking Princes Street and Gardens. However, I was put off dining there by my experience of breakfast, which was one of the worst I'd ever encountered. The scrambled eggs were grey, flat and solid - quite disgusting and inedible. Satisfactory for one night but I would not recommend it for any longer.
