We stayed at the Barbican for a week on a theater trip, having picked it for its proximity to the Barbican Arts Centre. Overall, the hotel was a pleasant experience, and I would stay there again. The pluses were: a clean, contemporary bathroom with an excellent shower, a pull-out couch that became a queen-size bed, exceptionally helpful service, a food store and several restaurants/cafes in easy walking distance, and a three minutes' walk to the Tube. We were also able to have friends over late at night without any questions from the front desk. The size of the room was OK by British standards, with everything modern and in clean condition. There was construction going on right next door, but our windows faced the other way so the noise did not disturb us. Amongst the minuses was the fact that the room wasn't cleaned and the towels/sheets not changed for our entire stay. We knew in advance that we could get these services at an additional fee, but with the price of 7 pounds per towel, we opted for drying the existing ones. Also, the hotel recently banned all smoking, which I specifically inquired after in advance and was told repeatedly that smoking WAS allowed. In short, if you don't smoke, don't mind cleaning your own room and are able to bring your own towels, the Barbican is a place I would firmly recommend. Good value for the money!
