The hotel has a great ambience - historic, elegant, welcoming - quality throughout! The Rugby League museum and memorabilia were an added bonus for us local league team supporters! Checking in was straightforward - Roomex had it all sorted. The room was good: very spacious with nice BIG and comfortable bed, quality sheets etc; the bathroom a good size; no noise from outside. There are some fabulous real ale pubs in the area - we love real ale - and we visited 6, two of them being in the adjacent station buildings, and had probably 70 different English traditional cask ales available to us, almost all from small, independent breweries. The Speckled Hen on the hotel bar didn't interest us, though. But what was really special was the breakfast. Self-service English or continental, or the best bits of both, in our case. There was a great range of fresh juices; superb quality bacon - BIG Big slices, lightly cooked and very, very tender; quality local butchers' sausages, as well as the usual other stuff. On the continental side, yoghurt, with walnuts, raisins and banana chips to go with it; Danish pastries and muffins, and slices of super, tasty, moist rye bread. Butter was in an open pot - not foil wrapped; jams in those little jars, in an elegant tiered stand on each table - six jars around a little bud vase; flavoursome tea (3 bags) in a heavy quality pot, fresh milk, chunks of rock sugar - brown and white.... snow-white damask table cloths ... ooooh!!... everything just ooozed quality! We revelled in it! And will definitely go back! Thanks to Roomex for good organisation and a great price deal.

It was good to stay at a good old fashioned hotel in the centre of Huddersfield. I know we could have chosen a newer one on the outskirts of town, but you can't beat being in the middle of things; and you can't get more "middle" than opposite the station. Although built in the century before last, the George has kept up to date. The staff were all polite and helpful too, so no complaints. Thank you Roomex for making the booking for us.
